The track base is now complete as far as the intermediate station on the mountain pass line, and slightly beyond, and I have been laying the track and have successfully run trains to and from the station. I had to use flexible track because the fixed-radius curves I have in hand are not small-enough radiusContinue reading “Laying Track Through the Mountains”

Population Growth!
If you have been following my story you will already have seen some of my people, clearing snow, waiting for buses, visiting the Die Post and shops or ice-skating. These are well-detailed, realistically posed, and expensive, figures from Noch, Preiser and other continental manufacturers. I am fortunate to receive these from time to time asContinue reading “Population Growth!”
Completing some odd jobs!
Over the weekend I completed three tasks which have occupied the back of my mind for many weeks! The big one, which did not actually take very long, was properly mounting the control panel on a permanent bracket in front of the layout: the panel itself needs to be removable for exhibition purposes, and whenContinue reading “Completing some odd jobs!”
Lighting the Village (2)
Although I wanted the building interiors to be lit at all times to bring the place to “life”, I felt it would be wrong to have the street lights on all day as well, so I wanted to put these on a switched lighting circuit. My original intention had been to wire up the seilbahnContinue reading “Lighting the Village (2)”
Building the Village
Innsdorf is intended to represent a typical resort village in the Engadin valley early in the winter sport season. There is a “dusting” of snow in the village, but skiing is taking place up on the surrounding mountain slopes. I wanted to create the sort of busy scene that a visitor would see in suchContinue reading “Building the Village”
Signalling Innsdorf Station
Swiss signalling is very distinctive and I had no idea (a) how it should work or (b) where I could buy the signals (or parts to make them). I searched on the World Wide Web for Swiss railway signalling and found some very comprehensive information, including a very helpful article on Wikipedia which I haveContinue reading “Signalling Innsdorf Station”
Scenery: the village and the mountain
To some extent the scenery has been progressing along with the construction of the railway. I have been acquiring buildings, vehicles, trees, people and scenic materials of various types while I have been buying the track and trains etc., and some of the scenery has to be built as the railway is built: the stationContinue reading “Scenery: the village and the mountain”
Ballasting the track
Once the track was wired and tested, it was time to add the gravel ballast. The cork underlay provides the actual ballast effect, but to give it a realistic appearance, real granite chipping are added between the sleepers. Most chippings sold for OO and HO track look too large to me (see the pictures onContinue reading “Ballasting the track”
Laying the Foundation
A firm foundation on well-built baseboards is essential for a reliable model railway. I had an additional challenge which was to store an existing layout in the same room; my solution was to make double brackets that could hold the old railway beneath the new one. One day I hope that both will be availableContinue reading “Laying the Foundation”
My Photography
I have been publishing my photographs on Flickr for many years, although since starting the new model railway layout I have become a little behind with posting photographs … I must catch up one day, but it is still worth a look as photographs are ageless anyway! There are some digitised images from the seventiesContinue reading “My Photography”
